WE KNOW what it sounds like from the title...
After the long-awaited graduation and securing a job, the last thing you would want to think of is to use your precious rest days to torture your body, I mean, to workout. However, health is an important habit that should be prioritized in everyone's life, maybe the most important one. After all, health is wealth. Personally, this is one of our GREATEST regrets - not starting our fitness journey earlier. We think that health can be categorized into two aspects - physical exercise and nutrition.
In this post, we will be emphasizing the importance of being active, no matter our age. Often, we have observed (in our friends and colleagues) that having a full-time job makes it easier to neglect your active lifestyle, especially since you have less free time and more valid excuses not to.
Some of the MOST common excuses include:
“I need to work overtime”
“I need more sleep, hence no time to workout”, etc.
However, we soon found out that physical activities are important to maintain good health - physically AND mentally. Similar to others on the same boat, we started our resolution to be healthier after noticing a significant increase in our waistlines after one year of working full-time. Without meaning to, we have consistently opted to be sedentary, always citing lethargy after work as our primary reason. This, coupled with the tendency to eat out from the newfound financial freedom, causes an unhealthy weight gain, which negatively impacts our lives.
Our first resolve is to start being MORE ACTIVE. Instead of jumping directly into intense and unsustainable workouts, we started small - 30 minutes of moderate or light exercises every other day or night walk around our neighborhood after dinner. We also chose walking over taking the bus when we have time and when the distance is reasonable. We do not focus on how many calories we burn, but more on trying to enjoy being more active to prevent burning out.
Slowly, we started enjoying moving our bodies to keep active and that is when we started exploring and incorporating more intense workouts into our life. A TIP is to sign up for workout classes, preferably one with an exercise program that reduces too much thinking on your part and holds you accountable. These classes usually come with trainers that help correct your exercise form to minimize injuries and motivate you as well. Remember, the goal here is to be CONSISTENT, and anything that helps count. We think that signing up for a gym without someone to guide you may be counter-productive at this stage. Not only do you have to plan your workout regime, but you also have to be very conscious of your postures and forms. Independent exercises can be dangerous if not done properly, as we are sure you all know. In this case, the Internet can only help you so much without anyone to correct you. All these, if done consistently, should help you create a sustainable routine and a habit of being active. Now, we love to sweat and exercise only invigorates us! You will soon find that the energy from the adrenaline is a one-of-a-kind, the best kind of craving that your body should often indulge in.
